Currawong Books Press is an independent Australian picture-book imprint based in the Huon Valley, lutruwita / Tasmania. Founded in 2026 by writer and art director James Nielsen, the press publishes one or two carefully made books a year — slow, considered, distinctly Australian.

The press is interested in quiet stories about belonging, country, creativity, and the small everyday wonders of Australian life — picture books for children aged three to eight, made for reading aloud at bedtime or on a rug under a gum tree. Manuscripts are edited carefully. Illustrations are art-directed and revised, often many times, until they sit alongside the story rather than merely on top of it. Print specifications are chosen for longevity, not unit cost.

Each Currawong title is produced in hardcover for global trade distribution through IngramSpark, with a small signed-and-numbered first edition reserved for collectors and family libraries. The first title, Clara the Carolling Currawong, releases December 2027.
